Deep Pressure Vests - A Gentle Hug With Big Benefits
Deep Pressure Vests can be incredibly helpful for people with additional needs, especially when it comes to feeling calm and grounded. In this post, we’ll explore what they are, how they work, and why they might make a real difference—whether at home, school, or out and about.
What are Deep Pressure Vests?
Deep pressure vests, sometimes called 'bearhug vests' wrap around the body and shoulders, providing deep pressure to the upper body. This deep pressure feels like a hug which can make the wearer feel comforted and safe.
Sensory Direct deep pressure vests comprise of two parts - a body wrap and shoulder straps. The vests are made from perforated neoprene which is comfortable and allows the body to breathe. You can adjust the position of the shoulder wraps to get the required pressure.
What are the benefits of deep pressure vests?
There are many benefits to wearing a deep pressure vest. Most commonly they're used to reduce anxiety and stress. The deep pressure received from the tight fitting vest promotes a sense of security and safety, which can help to calm anxious and stressed bodies. This can be particularly beneficial for autistic individuals, helping to self regulate in situations when they feel deregulated.
They can also help reduce hyperactivity, with the deep pressure enabling the user to feel more grounded and 'in control'. This can help in a classroom setting where students may be over stimulated from the environment.
Who can use a Deep Pressure Vest?
The calming benefits of these vests make them popular with autistic individuals, people with ADHD, hyperactivity, or those who experience anxiety and stress.
Sensory Direct Deep Pressure Vests are available in three sizes.
- Small - Suitable for children aged 3 - 7 approx.
- Medium - Suitable for children aged 7 - 14 approx.
- Large - Suitable for teens and adults
We recommend that they are used with the direction and advice of your doctor, consultant, occupational therapist or other suitably qualified health professional.
How do you put on a Deep Pressure Vest?
Sensory Direct Deep Pressure Vests come with two parts, a body wrap and shoulder straps. The body wrap should be wrapped around the users body so that it is tight but comfortable. The straps should be placed over each shoulder to secure the vest in place. We recommend that the vest is worn over a t-shirt or shirt. They are thin enough to wear underneath a jumper, for discreet support.
How long should you wear a Deep Pressure Vest for?
We recommend that the deep pressure vests should be worn for period of 20 - 30 minutes and then removed for a suitable period of time.
Where to use a Deep Pressure Vest
Deep pressure vests can be worn in a variety of different settings. Most commonly used in classrooms to provide proprioceptive input for autistic children who may need support to calm or self regulate. They can also be used at home, work or out and about if you are feeling anxious stressed. It's important to note that we recommend the vest is only worn for periods of 20 - 30 minutes at a time. This should be ample time for the deep pressure to calm and relax the body. Any longer than this may result in the body becoming used to the level of pressure, and therefore not giving the support required.
